Health authorities in several countries have restricted the availability of erectile dysfunction drugs, warning that they could limit the number of men who might benefit from Viagra, a widely used treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has restricted the sale of Viagra, the drug industry group said in a regulatory advisory.
A spokesman for the pharmaceutical group Safdarq said: "The MHRA's regulatory action is not in response to a recent study that found widespread use of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, was linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events and strokes, and an increased risk of cerebrovascular events, particularly in men over 40."
In a statement, the MHRA said it was investigating whether the restricted sale of Viagra had a "major effect on the effectiveness and safety of sildenafil," and recommended "restricting the sale of Viagra to men who are prescribed the drug, especially in countries where there has been a significant increase in its use."
In a statement, the drug industry said it was "not aware of any significant restrictions on the availability of Viagra for men in the EU, UK or Australia who have used sildenafil before".

He added: "The effects of sildenafil in some men are reversible, but the risk remains high in men who are already taking other medications to manage the symptoms of erectile dysfunction.
